The two sides hoped to reign in the Cold War arms race. The talks continued for three years and resulted in the signing of the SALT I Agreement on May 26, 1972. The agreement led to the signing of additional arms control treaties and agreements, including SALT II and the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START ).
