In addition, an NVQ evaluator must design course plans, provide course content, and assist with course development. Candidates can also help customize courses or NVQ requirements to their own specializations. The evaluator should create portfolios for candidates and ensure that grades and documentation are maintained on each record. Students are assessed based on portfolio and other work-related assignments.

An NVQ evaluator also provides helpful feedback to candidates so that, if needed, students can improve or make changes based on that feedback. He or she helps candidates recognize the skills they already have and informs them of the need to continue working on certain skills. He or she also helps candidates demonstrate their skills and then assesses their competence based on the demonstration.

To become an NVQ assessor, a person must earn an assessor qualification, known as an A1 or A2. In addition, the appraiser should have experience in the area he or she will be appraising. For example, someone who is an NVQ assessor in the field of management must have previously worked in management in some capacity.

NVQs have become more common as specialist skills and training have become more important in the UK. More and more employers require NVQs as conditions of employment. The benefits of having an NVQ include higher salaries and more opportunities for promotion. They usually take one to two years to complete, although there is usually no time limit.
