In 40% of US households, women earn more than their male partners, with this being more common in low-income households. However, on average, women earn $0.77 for every dollar earned by men. Women who are primary breadwinners are less pessimistic about the economy and most work in education, healthcare, and public services. Those who earn more than their male partners are more likely to keep separate bank accounts.

American women earn more than their male partners in about 40% of US households. This is more common in low-income households and becomes less common as a household’s income increases: 70% of women in bottom 20% income households earn more than their male partners, while about 50% do does in middle-income households and only about 34% do so in high-income households. Despite this, studies show that women, on average, earn $0.77 US Dollars (USD) for every dollar earned by men.
