Bubble wrap was initially created as three-dimensional wallpaper but ended up being used as a packing material for fragile objects. Sealed Air Corporation owns the trademark and offers stress-relieving bubble wrap, as well as iBubble wrap that cannot be opened.
In the 1950s, bubble wrap inventors Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes initially thought the air-filled material they created would be a hit as three-dimensional wallpaper. When that didn’t work, Fielding and Chavannes tried their prototype bubble wrap plastic as greenhouse insulation, and it worked quite well. However, Chavannes quickly realized that this invention would make a perfect packing material for fragile objects, much better than crumpled pieces of newspaper… and the rest is history. Many other uses have been found for bubble wrap, including solar heating covers for swimming pools and window insulation.
Top of the pops:
“Bubble wrap” is a generic trademark owned by Sealed Air Corporation, a North Carolina-based company co-founded by Alfred Fielding that has made billions selling rolls of its “air-filled hemispheres.”
The company also likes to remind consumers of the product’s stress-relieving potential — many people just can’t resist bursting one bubble after another. The company also offers the iBubble wrap, which cannot be opened.
Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day is celebrated on the last Monday in January of each year.
