Other options include the Atlanta Skydiving Center, Atlanta Botanical Garden, and Atlanta Braves games at Turner Field.
Outdoor activities in Atlanta, Georgia can take you to beautiful natural settings, appreciate history, or both! Some attractions are right in town, others just a short drive away, but either way, Atlanta has a lot to offer.
Piedmont Park in the city center is just one outdoor activity in Atlanta designed for family fun. Including a playground, swimming pool, cycle paths and tennis courts. The Atlanta Zoo is located in Grant Park, where in addition to visiting one of the oldest zoos in the country, you can skate, jog or ride a bike. Or try Stone Mountain Park, where in addition to miles of trails, you can glimpse history as you view the Confederate war heroes sculpture carved into the granite monolith, or visit the theme park, which offers rides, sightseeing, and miniature golf . For a resort, try Callaway Gardens.
As a great resource for hiking, canoeing and fishing, with parks built along 48 miles (77 km) of its banks, the Chattahoochee River and surrounding regions provide a great extension to outdoor activities in Atlanta. Named after the river, Chattahoochee National Forest offers 430 miles (692km) of trails, scenic drives, and campsites, and through the forest is the Chattooga. The Chattooga River, designated a Wild and Scenic River by Congress in 1974, was used in the film Deliverance and can satisfy lazy canoeists, those craving a guided raft trip, or those looking to brave its rapids, depending on which section you choose for the boating.
Also along the Chattahoochee is Lake Lanier, a man-made lake. Although the lake has been popular for houseboating, jetskiing, and the Lake Lanier Islands water park, it formed the focal point of a fight between Georgia, Florida, and Alabama in 2007 as drought threatened the region. You may wish to check developments ahead of your visit.
If you want to combine historic sites into your Atlanta outdoor activities, you can visit Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park or the Surrender Marker on the Northwest Corner or Alabama and South Peachtree Streets. Oakland Cemetery is the final resting place of many Confederate soldiers, several generals, and Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone with the Wind. If you care to drive further afield, you can visit the Chickamauga and Chattanooga Military Park.
Other outdoor activities in Atlanta include the Atlanta Skydiving Center, where the US Eastern Skydiving Championship is hosted, and the Atlanta Botanical Garden. And if your idea of the outdoors includes spectator sports, you might want to consider an Atlanta Braves game at Turner Field. (Sorry football fans – the Atlanta Falcons play in the Georgia Dome, so it’s definitely an indoor activity!)
