Outdoor games for kids?

Playing outdoors is more fun for children than indoors. Tag, hopscotch, and capture the flag are popular outdoor games. Hopscotch can be played indoors with duct tape.

In general, playing children outdoors can be more fun than playing indoors; children can feel free to run, jump and scream without disturbing adults. One of the most popular outdoor children’s games is tag. To play this, a child agrees to be “the one,” meaning the hunter/tagger. He runs after all his playmates and tries to touch (tag) them. Once he tags one of his Playmates, that tagged Playmate becomes “it” and must then chase everyone else.

In tag, there is sometimes a structure that is referred to as a “base,” such as a tree, post, or bench. When one of the playmates touches “base,” she is temporarily safe from being tagged. However, he may not continuously touch “base” for an entire game. It is typically only used for a second or two, such as when a runner needs to catch their breath

Hopscotch is another of the most popular outdoor games for kids. To play this game, someone draws a hopscotch drawing on the ground in chalk; it consists of eight sections, which are numbered. Each player starts with a marker, which is often something like a stone or bottle cap. Then, a child throws his marker into the first square and, without touching square one, jumps into square two, continuing to jump to the last square, turning around and jumping again. On his way back, he takes the token from the first square and then jumps into square one and backtracks from the bell drawing.

Play continues with players taking turns throwing tokens into each square one by one, until they have completed all squares. A child loses if he throws his token into the wrong square, steps on a line, puts down any part of his body when stooping to pick up his token, jumps into a square with the token, or puts two feet in a box. This is one of the popular outdoor kids games that can be played indoors as well. Instead of using chalk, duct tape can be used to create the hopscotch chart on a basement or gym floor.

Capture the flag is also on the list of the most popular outdoor games for kids. To play this game, children divide into two teams and develop two territories. The boundaries of each territory are decided, and each team also designates an area for their prison. Then each team places its flag in a designated area, from which it cannot be moved unless the other team captures it.

Once the designated areas are created, each team attempts to capture the other team’s flag and return it to their territory. Some of the kids on each team work to protect the team’s flag while the other kids go out to try and capture the opposing team’s flag. Players can capture opposing team members when they enter their territory, tagging them and saying captured three times before other players are able to escape. When this happens, the captured player goes to the prison area until his team members are able to sneak in and free him. To win the game, one team must grab the opposing team’s flag and carry it back to its own team’s territory.
