Penis curvature: what is it?

Peyronie’s disease, or penile curvature, causes an abnormally curved erect penis, pain during erection, and functional problems. Trauma or medical conditions may cause it, and there are medical and surgical treatments available.

Curvature of the penis, also called Peyronie’s disease, is a condition in which a man’s erect penis becomes abnormally curved. Symptoms of penile curvature include pain during erection and functional problems. Scientists aren’t 100% sure what causes the condition, but trauma to the penis or certain medical conditions may play a role. In some cases, a person may also be born with a curved penis. Fortunately, there are medical and surgical treatments that can prove beneficial for a man who has penile curvature.

When a man has penile curvature, he can experience a number of symptoms. The most common symptom of this condition is a curve in the erect penis that can be seen with the naked eye. This condition can also cause the penis to become noticeably narrower when in its erect state. Also, a man with this condition usually has areas of hard, thickened tissue inside his penis. While not a symptom for men who have penile curvature, this condition can also cause pain to the man’s partner during intercourse.

Scar tissue forms under the skin of the penis when a man has a penile curvature, possibly from some type of trauma. The scar tissue typical of this condition builds up, causes the penis to bend and often makes intercourse painful. Sometimes the curvature appears to be related to trauma to the penis, but this is not always the case. In fact, some men are born with penile curvature, called hypospadias, rather than Peyronie’s disease.

A condition called Dupuytren’s contracture is sometimes associated with penile curvature. This condition is characterized by a thickening on a person’s palm that causes the last two fingers of the hand to bend in the direction of the palm. A small percentage of men with the condition are also diagnosed with penile curvature.

There are medications that can be used in the treatment of penile curvature. For example, a doctor may inject a man’s penis with corticosteroid, which is a steroid hormone, in an attempt to cure him. Sometimes high blood pressure medications, taken by mouth or by injection, can help; doctors can even use shock wave or radiation therapy to treat it in some cases. When medical treatments fail, a man may opt for surgery. There is a possibility, however, that this type of surgery could render a patient with penile curvature impotent.
