Plasma donation: what to know?

Plasma donation is similar to blood donation, but involves separating red blood cells from plasma. Plasma can be used to help those with blood clotting issues and is often collected by pharmaceutical companies. Donors may be paid around $15-25 per donation, but should not lie about risky behaviors. Donating plasma too frequently can affect health and immunity. The process takes up to two hours and donors should eat a snack afterwards. Donating plasma is not just for desperate people and some do it to help sick family members.

Plasma donation may not be as common as blood donation although the two procedures are quite similar. Plasma makes up part of the blood and the main difference in the procedure is that red blood cells are separated from the plasma by a process called plasmapheresis. When you donate plasma, some red blood cells are recycled back into the body after being separated from the plasma.

There are some amazing things you can do with blood plasma. It can help people who have difficulty with blood clotting, for example. Much of the blood plasma that is collected can be used by pharmaceutical companies, and when you donate plasma, you usually cannot determine how the plasma is being used. Another difference is that many people get paid for donating plasma, which is usually not the case with donating blood. The compensation isn’t huge, but can be around $15-25 US Dollars (USD) per donation. Not all collectors pay, and some organizations like the American Red Cross urge you to donate without paying.

Screenshot of collection centers for certain types of things. If you have recently traveled to a foreign country, are promiscuous, or use intravenous drugs, you have the potential to pass the disease on to others. Do not lie about these behaviors as your plasma used in another person could have potentially fatal consequences. Collection centers will also examine your health, weight, behavior, any prescription drugs you may be taking, and will likely test your blood for anemia. Some centers also check for high blood sugar.

Some people donate plasma twice a week, and in theory, if you’re very healthy, your plasma should be fully restored within 48 hours of donating. However, organizations like the Red Cross will only allow you to donate once a month or twelve times a year. Other collection centers will allow people to donate twice a week, but this may not be in your best health interest. There is some evidence that regular weekly plasma donation can affect health, energy and immunity. Getting $25 twice a week might not be worth it if you’re getting sick or feeling exhausted.

When you donate plasma, most centers state that the total process can take up to two hours. People who donate frequently can be in and out of a center in about 45 minutes to an hour. You’ll need a snack after you donate, and most centers have cookies and juice available. Bring something to read with you and don’t forget to use the bathroom before giving the plasma because you can’t stop the process in between.

Some people see donating plasma as something only desperate people do, but that’s not the case. There are many students donating plasma and some people will donate plasma to help sick family members who need it. If you’re considering donating plasma as a source of income, keep in mind that you can only make a limited amount of income, and many plasma centers have much looser restrictions than the Red Cross. The ability to donate more frequently is not always in the best interest of donors.
