Poetry is a form of writing that can be figurative and written in verse with a rhyme scheme. Poems can include figurative language, verse, and rhyme patterns. Different types of verse include free, blank, and rhyming verse. Poetic terms describe the genre, mood, and meter used in poetry, with iambic pentameter being the most common.
Poetry is a form of writing that is often figurative and sometimes written in verse with a rhyme scheme. Some poems include figurative language, which is a word or words that have alternative meanings besides the standard definition; verse, which is a line of poetry that may have a specific rhyme pattern or meter; and rhyme pattern, which is a pattern of rhyming words or sounds in a poem. These are three basic terms in poetry to describe the form and function of poetry, although there are many other terms that define the complexity of poetic form.
Poetry is often written in different types of verse, including free verse, blank verse, and rhyming verse. Rhyme schemes can also vary: internal rhyme consists of sounds or words that rhyme within a line of poetry; end rhyme consists of sounds or words that rhyme at the end of each line. The rhyme scheme is the pattern with which lines rhyme. A verse, or section of a poem, may have a rhyme scheme like this:
A
B
A
B
C
Each letter represents a different sound. The sound of line 1 (A) will rhyme with the sound of line 3 (A), while the sound of line 2 (B) will rhyme with the sound of line 4 (B). The sound of line 5 will not rhyme with any of the other lines.
Other poetic terms may be used to describe the genre of the poem or the general mood of the poem. Renaissance poetry, modern poetry, and postmodern poetry are all poetic terms that describe a certain style of writing that was common during a certain period of time. The characteristics of the poems created during these individual time periods may have some distinguishing characteristics which would make it much easier for the reader to identify them as a certain genre.
Poetry terms describing the type of meter used in poetry are perhaps the most common. Iambic pentameter is the best known meter; this type of meter consists of five iambs. An iambus is a combination of an unstressed and a stressed syllable. An iambic pentameter line might read like this:
“Maybe I won’t leave this place today.”
The first syllable of the word “perhaps” or “for-“, is unstressed, so the last part of the word, or “-haps”, is stressed or pronounced more strongly than the first part of the word. There are other types of meter, although iambic pentameter is one of the most common.
