During the Cambrian period, which dates back to more than 500 million years ago, it was believed that plants did not have such a bright color, indicating the presence of polyphenols. It was presumably around the Jurassic period, about 200 million years ago, that plants “evolved” to have more polyphenolic antioxidants and resembled the plants that exist today.

The polyphenolic antioxidant benefits also include a decreased risk and overall improvement of cardiovascular disease. The antioxidant also has an inflammatory function that can improve artery-related diseases. It has also been observed that it may lower cholesterol levels. The risk of bone disease can also be reduced, as regular intake of the antioxidant can increase bone density.

The health benefits of the polyphenol antioxidant have also been exploited in beauty products. The antioxidant is supposed to help the skin maintain its youthful appearance and prevent premature wrinkles and age spots, as the skin is always exposed to sources of oxygen, such as sunlight. The most popular and common method, however, of using the antioxidant is through ingestion.

The plants and foods rich in polyphenolic antioxidants are teas, which may explain why Asians, who drink large amounts of tea, are said to age better than Caucasians. Wine and grapes have also recently been found to contain the antioxidant, specifically the kind called resveratrol. Apples, asparagus, broccoli and pears also contain the antioxidant polyphenol. Berries like strawberries, blackberries and blueberries also have the antioxidant, as do spices like thyme, rosemary, turmeric and mint.
