Popeye’s family?

Popeye has four nephews named Peepeye, Poopeye, Pipeye, and Pupeye. Swee’Pea, a baby boy, was adopted by Popeye and confusion exists over whether he is related to Olive Oyl. Popeye also has a magical dog named Eugene and a hamburger-loving best friend named J. Wellington Wimpy.

Popeye’s only real relatives are his nephews, lookalike boys named Peepeye, Poopeye, Pipeye, and Pupeye. They first appeared in the cartoon in 1940, although in that episode they appeared as Popeye’s sons in a dream sequence. They reappeared in 1942 and were clearly presented as Sailor Man’s grandchildren. Some cartoons only feature two or three grandchildren, with no explanation as to the discrepancy.

In a 1933 cartoon, Popeye received a baby boy in the mail, whom he adopted and named Swee’Pea, although there is often confusion as to whether the baby is related to Popeye’s girlfriend Olive Oyl. The expressive child appeared in the first Popeye animated short, Max Fleischer’s 1936 “Little Swee’Pea,” in which Popeye proclaims, “There’s no ifs or maybes / I’ll never have children! / I’m Popeye the Sailor!”

In the cartoon “Popeye in Goonland” (1938), Popeye tells us that he has not seen his Pappy since his birth, 40 years earlier.
Popeye has a magical dog he calls Eugene the Jeep, but the dog appears to exist in a parallel universe. He answers questions by bowing – once for yes and twice for no – and consumes only orchids.
Popeye’s best friend is hamburger-loving J. Wellington Wimpy, who first appeared as a referee in one of Popeye’s boxing matches.
