Urban legends are stories that are believed to be true, but often become distorted or exaggerated over time. They cover a range of topics, including supernatural events, murder, and cautionary tales. Coca Cola® has its own set of urban legends, known as Cokelore. In recent years, many urban legends have emerged related to e-mail and the Internet, but most can be easily dismissed as false.

Urban legends are a special kind of tale that is spread on the belief that events actually happened. While many of these stories originated from true events, they often become distorted or exaggerated as they are broadcast.

Some of these legends have been around for a long time, like the one about alligators in the New York City sewer system. According to the story, discarded pet alligators made their way to the sewers, where they metamorphosed into adult albino creatures. This legend has been around since 1959 with very little variation.

Many well-known urban legends deal with supernatural events, such as the case of the disappearing hitchhiker. According to the story, a driver on a deserted highway picks up a beautiful woman, only to see her vanish from the passenger seat minutes later. Later, she discovers that she has been dead for more than ten years. Another of the most famous horror stories is the story of Bloody Mary, in which a vengeful spirit can be summoned by singing “Bloody Mary” in front of a mirror 13 times.

After supernatural events, the most common subject for such legends has to do with the murder of insane people. This is the case with the story of the killer hiding in the backseat of a car, as well as the story of the babysitter who receives threatening phone calls that turn out to come from an upstairs room. A few years ago, there was a rumor that a gang went around without headlights and killed anyone who flashed them. Many of these stories originated as cautionary tales or warnings from concerned parents.

There are so many urban legends about Coca Cola® that there is actually a term for them, Cokelore. The most famous has to do with the mixing of Pop Rocks® soda and candy. According to legend, doing so causes the stomach to explode. Another popular urban legend states that a tooth can dissolve overnight if left in a glass of Coke® or that it is possible to die of carbon dioxide poisoning from drinking too much of the beverage.

In recent years, many urban legends related to e-mail and the Internet have been born. Many of these have to do with harmful viruses circulating on the Internet and requests for prayers or donations for the sick. Most of these stories can easily be dismissed as they simply sound too outrageous to be true.
