Preventable global disease: how much?

[ad_1]

A quarter of all diseases are preventable due to environmental factors, with children under 5 being the most affected. Improved sanitation, fuel use, and building safety could save 13 million lives annually. Poor diet, lack of exercise, tobacco, and alcohol are the main factors in the US, while better water supplies could prevent 90% of diarrhea cases. Cardiovascular disease causes nearly 3 million deaths annually, double that of cancer.

About a quarter of all cases of the disease are preventable and caused by environmental factors that could be changed, health experts say. Children are even more affected by diseases caused by environmental factors, with about a third of all cases of preventable disease in children under the age of 5. It is estimated that around 13 million lives could be saved every year if precautions were taken to better manage the environments. The main preventable diseases worldwide are diarrhoea, malaria, lower respiratory tract infections and accidental injuries. These could be reduced by improving sanitation with water storage and toxic handling, cleaner use of fuel, and improved building safety.
