One of the top attractions in Providence is the Benefit Street Mile of History. Numerous historic structures are found along the way. A must-see attraction for anyone visiting the city is the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art located on Benefit Street. The Museum contains over 80,000 works of art ranging from paintings to examples of ancient Roman and Greek art. Permanent exhibitions of Latin American, European and Asian art, as well as American folk art, will provide many hours of enjoyment with creations from different eras and cultures.
People interested in historical drawings of places of worship will also find plenty to enjoy in Providence. There are a number of historic churches within the city, representing a diverse range of faiths. The First Baptist Church is considered the oldest church building of that faith in the country, while the First Unitarian Church of Providence provides an excellent example of the neoclassical style of churches. Both St. John’s Cathedral and the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul have some of the finest stained glass in the entire city. Many of the churches offer guided tours during the week and limited guided tours on the weekends.
Waterplace Park and the Riverwalk also offer many places to see and the opportunity to get plenty of exercise. Including a four-acre stretch of parkland with cobbled walkways, the facility includes an amphitheater and a number of picturesque spots for a picnic. As the perfect place for family gatherings or a simple Saturday afternoon outdoors, the park and riverfront offer a peaceful pace and an excellent opportunity to unwind after a busy week.
Westminster Arcade, also known as Providence Arcade, is the shopping mecca of the city of Providence. First built in 1828, the Arcade is considered the oldest enclosed shopping mall in the United States. The entire structure was renovated and extended in a makeover in 1980 and currently contains an eclectic mix of well-known national chains and an impressive array of locally owned shops. With three floors loaded with shops, it is possible for the visitor to enjoy a lot of browsing and shopping while also enjoying a wide range of restaurants.
No trip to Providence is complete without spending some time at Nibbles Woodaway. Nibbles was originally known as The Bug, and was the brainchild of New England Pest Control. A contest conducted in 1990 came up with the fanciest name for the giant termite mascot. Located along Interstate 95, Nibbles is thought to be more than 928 times the size of a standard termite, standing over nine feet tall and fifty-eight feet long. Regarded as a local landmark, Nibbles has appeared in a number of television shows and even a few films.
