Proxy server settings: what are they?

Proxy server settings include direct connection, automatic detection, and manual configuration. Users can choose between HTTP and SOCKS proxies, clear cache, and enable secure pairing. Additional features include clearing cookies and temporary files and protecting against IP address leaks.

The most common proxy server settings are for direct connections to the Internet, automatic detection and manual configuration. You can also select HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) proxies and SOCKS, network proxy protocol. Additional settings include cache clearing and secure pairing.

The direct connection setting is used when a user wants to access the Internet directly, even if the browser is configured to use the proxy. It is one of the simplest and most common proxy server settings and is a useful feature when a user needs to switch from his real IP address to the proxy. When this setting is used, the proxy is ignored.

Proxy server settings can also be detected automatically. When computers on the network need to use the same proxy settings, you can set up a server and create a special profile using .ins and .cab files. This is a quick and easy way to check proxy settings from one central location as computers automatically detect the correct settings.

Manual configuration allows users to enter proxy server settings manually. This function is normally accessible via the “Tools” menu of the Internet browser. The settings panel will offer the option of no proxy, auto detect, system proxy settings and manual configuration. If manual configuration is selected, the user will be able to select the type of proxy they will use. The correct information can then be entered to complete the setup.

Users are often given the choice between HTTP proxies or SOCKS proxies, especially when proxy server software is used. User enters proxy address and port. If it is a secure proxy, the software will ask the user to enter a username and password as well.
Clearing the cache is another proxy server setting. Protects user data in case of saved passwords. Some proxy server software packages also offer the ability to clear your browser’s cookies and temporary files after you log out of the proxy.
Some proxy software packages also offer a secure association setting. When enabled, the user is protected even if the proxy server fails. This setting cuts your Internet connection if the proxy stops working while it’s in use, preventing your real IP address from being revealed. This is a useful feature when using secure sites or when “leaking” your IP address is a concern.
