Religious cults in China?

The Church of Almighty God, also known as Eastern Lightning, is a cult in China that believes Jesus Christ is a Chinese woman. Other cults exist in China, including The Apprentice Society, the Unification Church, and The Shouter’s Cult. Some cults have become deadly, such as the People’s Temple, the Branch Davidians, and Heaven’s Gate.

One definition of the word “cult” is “a relatively small group of people who hold religious beliefs or practices that others consider strange or sinister.” This would surely describe The Church of Almighty God, also known as Eastern Lightning, in China. This cult believes that Jesus Christ is currently living as a Chinese woman. Like most cults, Eastern Lightning has a core core in an established religion – in this case, Christianity – and pushes the faith to radical limits. In August 2014, two cult members were executed for beating a 35-year-old woman to death at a fast food restaurant because she “was a demon,” according to the Washington Post. Other cults exist in China, including The Apprentice Society, the Unification Church, and The Shouter’s Cult, which is affiliated with Eastern Lightning. Some consider Falun Gong a cult, but its beliefs are strongly rooted in Chinese Buddhism. The Chinese government recently released a list of 14 cults it considers dangerous to its society.

When cults become deadly:

On November 18, 1978, over 900 people died in Jonestown, Guyana as members of the People’s Temple, led by Jim Jones. Some who have left the cult say the deaths weren’t mass suicides, but mass murders.
On April 19, 1993, FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents raided the Mount Carmel compound near Waco, Texas, home of David Koresh and his cult, the Branch Davidians, amid allegations of child sexual abuse and assault. About 80 members of the organization died, including Koresh.
On March 26, 1997, 39 members of the Californian Heaven’s Gate sect committed suicide, in anticipation of a passage with an alien spacecraft following the Hale-Bopp comet.
