A security director is responsible for maintaining a safe and healthy workplace, managing emergency preparedness, organizing safety committees, staying within a budget, analyzing security programs, and ensuring compliance with safety laws. They may also need to travel for inspections and attend seminars.

A security director can work in any type of industry or corporation. He is generally responsible for all aspects of a company’s efforts to develop and maintain a safe and healthy workplace for all employees. Leading special projects and working on routine daily activities are typical general duties of a director of security.

For example, director of safety positions tend to focus as much on emergency preparedness issues as they do on regular inspection policies. In line with safe operation guidelines, company vehicles and equipment will need to be inspected regularly, according to a certain schedule, whether daily, monthly or more or less frequently. Safety directors ensure that these inspections are performed correctly. They write and maintain inspection reports. While these routine tasks are taking place, the director must also ensure that the company has adequate emergency first aid supplies and an evacuation plan in the event of a fire.

Safety directors manage fire drills and send emergency evacuation plan details to managers. They may also hold regular meetings with managers so that these leaders can educate employees who report to them on certain security matters. In some companies, the director of security will teach security concepts to groups of employees all at once. He may also lead employee volunteer safety committees that will organize supplies, such as water and non-perishable food, to be placed in a company pantry in the event of an emergency situation, such as an earthquake.

Staying within a budget is something a security director must do. He or she may have to propose an annual safety plan at an annual budget meeting and have the amount approved by senior management. Security directors must hire and train security staff while staying within a defined budget. Any communication materials or safety equipment must also be purchased within budget.

The use of computer programs to analyze and track the effectiveness of current security programs is often part of the director’s job description. He or she may have to take regular career refresher courses to maintain the security director certification. Depending on the industry and business, directors of safety may need to travel to inspect equipment or field facilities.

Working with local, regional and national governments to ensure compliance with safety laws is an ongoing responsibility of a safety officer. You may also need to travel to attend annual security seminars or workshops. The director usually reports the basic highlights of these meetings to corporate management or department managers.
