Bruising occurs when blood leaks from capillaries due to injury or weakened skin/capillaries. Medications or blood disorders can also cause bruising. Unexplained bruising may be from a forgotten injury and is generally not a major concern.
A bruise occurs when blood leaks from the capillaries, usually from a blow to the body, creating an area of discoloration that is visible through the skin until the leaked blood is reabsorbed. While it can be concerning if you feel like you’re bruising for no reason, even bruising that appears to be spontaneous generally has some source, and so is generally not a major cause for concern. If you feel like you’re bruising for no reason, you may have thinning skin or weakened capillaries. It’s also possible that a medication is causing you to bruise or that you have a blood disorder. Finally, your bruises could be caused by an injury so minor that you simply forgot about it.
If you feel like you’re bruising for no reason, you may actually be experiencing a side effect of thinning skin or weakened capillaries. Many people are affected by one or both of these conditions as they get older, and each makes the body more susceptible to bruising. Skin that has begun to thin offers little cushioning against bursts and bumps, and weak capillaries are more likely to leak blood than healthy vessels. While bruising from these conditions can be uncomfortable or unsightly, they are generally not a serious problem and therefore shouldn’t be a cause for concern.
Another factor that can make you look bruised for no reason is a reduction in the blood’s ability to clot. Sometimes, clotting problems are caused by a medication, especially one that is meant to thin the blood. In rare cases, clotting problems can be a symptom of a blood disorder. If you’ve started noticing unexplained bruising and have recently started a new medication or are young and otherwise healthy, you should see your doctor. He may change your medication or run tests to determine if a blood-related problem is responsible for your bruising.
Finally, a bruise that appears to have appeared for no reason may actually be the result of an injury so minor that you simply paid little attention to it. For example, you may have bumped your leg while getting up to go to the bathroom during the night. If your unexplained bruise happens as an isolated incident and fades within a few days, there’s a good chance it was caused by a forgotten injury and therefore isn’t a cause for concern.
