China’s marriage rate is declining as many adults prioritize their careers over love lives. Some companies are offering their employees over 30 extra days off during Chinese New Year to encourage dating. Women who reach their 20s or 30s without finding a partner are stigmatized as “leftovers.” China has more men than women and encourages families to have at least two children.
China has more people than any other country, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to meet that special someone. Indeed, the marriage rate in China has been on a downward trend, as many adults put their careers before their love lives. Looking to buck the trend, some companies have come up with new ways to make their employees think about things beyond work. In 2019, for example, at least two companies offered their employees over the age of 30 eight extra days off during the Chinese New Year celebration just so they could date and possibly meet the man of their dreams. Part of the problem stems from the long-standing stigma that suggests that women who reach their 20s or 30s without meeting their match are “leftovers” and therefore undesirable. Of course, many of these women are simply more focused on the business than the family, but that doesn’t necessarily fit into traditional cultural norms. According to Huang Lei, an HR manager at one of those companies, female employees are sometimes so career-focused that they don’t take time to think about relationships. “They have less contact with the outside world,” Huang said. “So we hope to give them more permission to give them more time and opportunities to connect with the opposite sex.”
