A vacation is a time to grab a variety of clothes to look good and feel good, but unlike most vacations, when we pack for a ski vacation we have so much more to pack. There are many variables to consider; we have to plan our days on the slopes, but also after-ski clothing and in the evening.
As you pack for your ski vacation, first pack your ski gear. You’ll need lots of layered clothes to keep warm and to spread out once it’s warmed up. For underwear, include thermal underwear, thin turtlenecks, and thin breathable socks. Beyond that you’ll probably want a fleece or sweater, water-repellent pants, and another pair of thicker socks, such as smart wool.
You’ll also need the outdoor essentials for your ski vacation, such as a hat, gloves, scarf or neckband, sunglasses or goggles, and of course, a warm ski parka. Layers are very important as the temperature often fluctuates throughout the day and our bodies heat up and cool down as we alternate between skiing and riding the lifts. If you have your own ski gear, remember to pack boots, skis and poles; if not, you can always rent them on site. Don’t forget to bring snacks and lots of sunscreen.
Sometimes the best part of a ski vacation is what happens after you ski. Après-ski attire will include a comfortable pair of boots and a change of trousers. In that, you’ll be comfortable enough to enjoy a cup of hot cocoa in the cabin, browse the shops in town, or go sightseeing.
Many ski resorts really come alive in the evening hours. Your ski holiday could take place in a small, quiet town with just a local pub and a burger joint, where après ski gear is all you need. However, many ski resorts offer a nightlife of trendy clubs and bars where a switch from apres ski attire is required. The ski resorts are all fairly casual, so you won’t need formal attire on your ski vacation, but pack some khakis or a nice pair of jeans, some nice sweaters or T-shirts, and perhaps a coat other than your parka from ski.
