South Koreans are more concerned about air pollution, water pollution, an aging population, and economic stagnation than North Korea’s nuclear weapons. South Korea has the worst air quality among OECD countries, causing health concerns for its citizens. Young South Koreans do not see North Korea as an immediate threat.
It turns out that Americans fear North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s highly publicized desire to develop and test nuclear weapons far more than Kim’s neighbors in South Korea. A 2017 survey of 3,839 adults found that the deteriorating quality of Air is actually South Korea’s top concern, followed by water pollution, the country’s aging population, and the threat of economic stagnation. South Korea has the worst air quality of the 36 member countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.
Breathing Concerns, Not Bombs:
Levels of fine particulate matter in the air – nearly three times higher than World Health Organization guidelines – are causing South Koreans to worry about cancer and respiratory ailments.
“I am directly breathing this toxic and polluted air every day on my way to work and at home,” explained a Seoul employee.
South Koreans have lived with their unpredictable neighbor to the north for decades, and most young people do not see the North Korean regime as an imminent threat.
