Standard of living and quality of life are different concepts, with the former focusing on material possessions and the latter on intangible factors like freedom and well-being. While measures for a good standard of living can vary by location, quality of life has a more universal theme. Developed countries tend to have higher levels of both.

Standard of living and quality of life are two similar concepts that seem like they can be used interchangeably. The fact is that the two are different and are defined by factors that are different. While standard of living is more concerned with an artificial predetermined state that has been accepted as a measure of the good life, quality of life is focused on more intangible objects that are not necessarily dependent on wealth.

Measures for a good standard of living can be local, national or international. In this sense, what may pass as a good standard of living in a local municipality may fail a national test. A standard accepted by a country as an indicator of a good standard of living may also fail when compared to accepted international standards. Quality of life has a more universal theme because those things are considered necessary for a good one to be common in all countries.

To fully understand the two concepts, it is necessary to know some of the attributes of standard of living and quality of life. Some of the factors that can easily come up when measuring standard of living include income, good housing, good job opportunities, high gross domestic product (GDP), low inflation, vacations, and security. Indicators of quality of life include factors such as freedom of expression and movement; right to religion, employment, dignity and privacy; peace of mind; and general satisfaction and well-being. It can be argued that quality of life can be improved by a good standard of living, but it is also important to note that even without all material items, a person’s quality of life can still be maintained.

One way the two concepts intersect is in measuring a country’s development. Most of the attributes of both are often found more in developed countries than less developed ones. As such, it can be said that the places where the majority of citizens have access to the factors that make up each concept are developed.
