Steel mill operations?

Steel is made by heating iron ore in a blast furnace, purging it of blemishes, and adding other elements to create steel. Galvanized steel is highly sought after due to its resistance to water damage and corrosion. Working in a steel mill can be dangerous, and finished steel must be prepared for shipment. Some usable products can be created on-site at the steel mill.

The steel making process takes place in a steel mill and some factories are set up to create usable products from steel as well. Steel is a metal alloy made up of a combination of iron and carbon, and to combine these two metals, the raw materials must be heated to a very high temperature. The iron ore must be heated and essentially smelted in a large blast furnace located within the steel mill, and the molten iron will then be purged of blemishes. Once this stage is completed, other elements will be added to the iron to create the steel.

Some of the other materials added to iron are meant to galvanize the steel. Galvanized steel is highly sought after because it tends to be resistant to water damage and corrosion such as rust. A steel mill will generally be able to create galvanized steel because it is the most marketable steel. The galvanizing process generally takes place while the molten iron is still in a liquid state. Once completed, the iron is turned into steel and the liquid steel is placed in molds, or molds, to cool and harden. Once the steel hardens, it can be transported to manufacturers who will transform the molten steel into usable products; this can also be done on site in a steel mill.

Working in a steel mill can be exceptionally dangerous for several reasons. First, the blast furnaces will be heated to extremely high temperatures which can be dangerous to nearby humans. Second, the molten metals exiting the blast furnace will also be exceptionally hot, not to mention difficult to handle. Workers must be trained to operate safely around furnaces and molten materials. Once the metals cool and harden, the finished steel will be quite heavy, meaning employees often have to do heavy lifting or operate heavy equipment such as forklifts.

The steel must be prepared for shipment by carrying the hardened steel bars and stacking them in a way that saves space when shipped by truck, train, airplane, or other method. This requires shipping staff to prepare the steel to leave the steel mill. In some cases, consumer-usable products can be created on-site at the steel mill, meaning that ease of shipping or transportation will depend on the types of products created from the steel.
