Tank cover: what is it?

Tank blanketing is the process of adding a layer of gas, usually nitrogen, to storage containers to protect the contents from oxygen and moisture. It is commonly used in the food industry and to protect flammable products. Nitrogen is an inexpensive and inert gas that can be used in almost any situation. Tank filling is used to preserve food products and prevent leaks. Tank liner is used as a safety device for flammable products. Control valves are an industry standard for tank blanketing.

When some items are stored, they need to be protected from the air to avoid damage or a chemical reaction with oxygen. To protect these items, they are often covered, or coated, with a layer of gas that keeps out oxygen. This process is called tank blanketing and is often used in the food industry and to protect flammable products.

The most commonly used gas for filling tanks is nitrogen. A layer of nitrogen is added to the empty space in a storage container, effectively covering the contents from the air and protecting them from moisture. Nitrogen is used because it is an inexpensive inert gas that can be used in almost any situation without causing a reaction with the contents of the storage container.

Tank filling is common in the food industry and is used to help preserve products and give them a longer shelf life. In some cases, such as with cooking oils, exposure to oxygen destroys the flavor and overall quality of the oil. The application of nitrogen prevents oxygen from coming into contact with the oil, preserving its value as a food product.

In some cases, nitrogen not only protects the product by preventing oxygen from reaching it, but it is also used to protect the contents of storage containers from leaks that could allow other contaminants to enter the system. This is done by creating a tank blanket that has positive pressure. If the container were to leak, pressurized nitrogen escapes from the leak, preventing anything from entering. This technique is used on anything that needs to be kept clean, like purified water.

Flammable products are also stored in containers using tank filling. For items that are at risk of exploding or catching on fire, tank liner is used as a safety device that effectively protects product, facilities and workers. The nitrogen layer ensures that no oxygen can reach the product and possibly cause a fire or explosion.

The tank coating process was previously done by hand. In the 1970s a control valve was developed which allowed for the filling and monitoring of the gas that was introduced into the system. Such valves are now an industry standard. The valves allow the blanket gas to be introduced into the tank and provide a means for it to escape should the internal pressure become too high. This adds security to the storage system, usually without the need for human intervention.
