Temp transducer: what is it?

A temperature transducer measures air temperature and sends the information to a power source for mechanical systems like heating and cooling. It can also display information on digital thermostats and be used in various applications beyond temperature control.

A temperature transducer is an electrical device usually used in automated air temperature control sequences. Its purpose is to carry out a measurement of the air temperature and transmit the information, after having translated it into a readable form, to a power source for the mechanical part of the system. Once the information has been taken from the temperature transducer and transmitted, the information is sent to the unit’s power source. Usually, when a transducer tells a mechanical unit, such as a furnace or cooling system, that it needs to kick in to create the desired temperature, it will also tell the unit when it has reached that desired temperature. This signals the unit to disengage, allowing many central air or central heating systems to operate efficiently.

When the unit’s power source detects information from the temperature transducer, it instructs the system to idle or turn on depending on the temperature that was measured. If the temperature falls below the setting entered into the system by the user, the heater is told to turn on until the air is measured by the temperature transducer to be at the user’s desired temperature. The same principle is applied to cooling systems however in these cases the temperature is read as above the set input prior to the activation of the cooling system.

Temperature transducers send the collected information to more sources than just the power source for the heating or cooling unit. Digital thermostats installed in many households and businesses use digital LCD screens to display the information read from the temperature transducer. The transducer measures the air temperature and translates it into information that the screen can display at the same time that the information is sent to the power source telling it whether to activate or not.

These transducers can also be used in a variety of useful applications, from communicating the outside temperature to an individual from inside a home or building, to informing researchers at what temperature a certain chemical or physical reaction occurs. The transducer itself is basically a sensor that has the ability to transfer the obtained information to another medium in a different form than originally read. This information can be translated into a digital screen, without having to tell any kind of mechanical unit to engage, disengage, or take no action.
