TOEIC is an exam used to assess non-native speakers’ English language skills for corporate or business purposes. The test has two main types: Listening and Reading Test and Speaking and Writing Test, covering various areas. The Listening and Reading Test has 200 multiple-choice questions, while the Speaking and Writing Test has open-ended questions. The scores range from 10 to 990 points for the Listening and Reading Test and 0 to 200 for the Speaking and Writing Test.

TOEIC is an acronym for Test of English for International Communication, which is an exam used to assess the general English language skills of non-native speakers for corporate or business purposes. This is used to measure the test takers’ level of English communication in the workplace. The Educational Testing Service (ETS), a US-based not-for-profit organization that acts as developer and administrator, creates the TOEIC questions, which cover a wide range of areas, including finance, healthcare, office management, manufacturing, and entertainment, travel and dining. The nature of the TOEIC questions is determined by the two main test types: the Listening and Reading Test and the Speaking and Writing Test.

There are 200 multiple-choice TOEIC questions in the Listening and Reading Test, which measure listening and reading comprehension in English. They are evenly divided into two sections of 100 questions, which correspond to the “listening” and “reading” parts of the test. The listening phase, lasting 45 minutes, consists of four parts, called photographs, question-answers, conversations and short conversations. This section requires test takers to answer questions based on the recorded conversations they listen to.

The second batch of TOEIC questions that make up the reading phase has a time of 75 minutes. This is divided into three parts: incomplete sentences, error recognition or text completion, and reading comprehension. In this section, test takers answer questions by reading the materials provided. A section of approximately 30 minutes is added to the Listening and Reading Test to answer questions of a biographical nature.

There are fewer questions in the Speaking and Writing Test section. The speaking part has 11 questions, while the writing part has eight. Unlike the multiple-choice format of the Listening and Writing Test, these TOEIC questions are open-ended. They involve tasks such as describing the details of an image, answering questions as an interviewee, resolving issues in the workplace, and issuing business-related opinions. The speaking section usually gives you 20 minutes of allotted time, while the writing section gives you an hour for completion.

TOEIC questions on the Listening and Reading Test are scored on a scale of 10 to 990 points. The resulting certificate is awarded in any of five color tiers: gold (860-990), blue (730-855), green (470-725), brown (220-465) or orange (10-215). Each part of the Speaking and Writing Test has a score range from 0 to 200, with eight levels of demonstrated English proficiency.
