Tourism jobs vary by region but can include travel agents, tour guides, hotel staff, security officers, and activities managers. Hospitality management is common, as are area-specific jobs like casino staff and lifeguards. In historic cities, jobs may focus on educating tourists through museum curation.

Specific jobs in tourism can vary from region to region, although some broad categories include travel agent, tour guide, hotel manager or staff, security clerk or officer, hospitality manager, activities manager and many more. There are numerous jobs in tourism based on the specific appeal of an area, and most jobs revolve around making the experience a positive one for visitors. Some tourism jobs focus specifically on educating tourists about a specific area or historical event; therefore, forest ranger might even fall under the category of tourism jobs. Vendors who sell goods to tourists in a specific area can also fall into this category.

Hospitality management and staff is one of the most common jobs in tourism. This includes hotel staff and management, bed and breakfast ownership and management, and even concierge service and transportation. Large hotel chains are common around the world, and hire cleaning staff, front desk staff, pool staff, bar and restaurant staff, and even security staff. Smaller hotels can hire these jobs as well, albeit on a smaller scale. Bed and breakfasts are often, though not exclusively, family-run, and these businesses may also hire cleaning staff and other services.

Area-specific jobs include casino management and staffing, cruise ship operations, and lifeguarding, to name a few. In places like Las Vegas or Atlantic City, tourism jobs revolve almost exclusively around gambling and hotel accommodations. Taxi drivers also thrive in such places, as do artists such as musicians, magicians, dancers and other performers. Casinos will hire a significant amount of security staff, as well as table vendors, waitresses, waiters, and food or souvenir vendors. Cruise ship operations can include being part of the crew that actually runs the boat, or it can mean coordinating entertainment for cruise ship guests. Lifeguards may be on call full time for onboard pools and hot tubs. Lifeguards can also find work in swimming pools in any region or on beaches near the ocean or lakes.

In larger cities, tourism jobs can vary significantly depending on the tourist attractions of the city. Historic cities like Boston often have a lot of jobs that revolve around the education of historical events; museum curation is common, and curators will be responsible for displaying and maintaining the museum itself. Curators are active in ensuring that the museum is displaying the most relevant information in a fun and educational way.
