Hartford, Connecticut, has popular tourist attractions such as the State Capitol, Bushnell Memorial Park, and Elizabeth Park Rose Gardens with over 15,000 rose bushes. The Bushnell Park Carousel and Spanish American War Memorial are also popular.
There are several popular tourist attractions in Hartford, the capital of Connecticut, as it is one of the original cities of the United States. Hartford began as the House of Hope fort which was built in 1636 by the Reverend Thomas Hooker. The 1878 State Capitol and Legislative Office Building are popular tourist attractions in Hartford, as are Bushnell Memorial Park and the Carousel and Elizabeth Park Rose Gardens.
Elizabeth Park Rose Gardens has more than 15,000 rose bushes and 800 different rose varieties. The Park also features a perennial garden with gazebo, a herb garden and a restful rock garden alongside a display of ornamental grasses. Elizabeth Park Rose Gardens also has wedding areas and a picnic area. Park’s Tree Trail may be one of Hartford’s most interesting tourist attractions for tree lovers, as the trail takes tourists on a leisurely stroll to discover forty labeled trees, some over 100 years old. Some of the trees in Elizabeth Park Rose Gardens have been identified as the largest species in Connecticut by the Connecticut Botanical Society.
Bushnell Memorial Park is one of Hartford’s most popular tourist attractions. The Park takes its name from the Reverend Horace Bushnell who, inspired by New York’s Central Park, wanted to create a green space in an industrial urban landscape. In 1853, Bushnell proposed building a public park with public money, and Bushnell’s proposal was eventually approved by Hartford voters. Though it took many years for the park to fully develop, with its thousands of trees and shrubs and unique history, Bushnell Memorial Park is both a popular green space and a major tourist attraction in Hartford.
The Bushnell Park Carousel is one of the oldest in the United States and is generally known to operate from May through mid-October. It was made in 1914 by Russian immigrants Solomon Stein and Harry Goldstein, who began carving carousel pieces for Coney Island in the 1800s. Goldstein and Stein’s carousel horses are known for their wild eyes and open mouths with set teeth as well as for the large rose decorations on their bodies.
The Spanish American War Memorial is another must-see tourist attraction in Hartford’s Bushnell Memorial Park. The Memorial honors Hartford residents who served in the Spanish American War of 1898-1899. A statue of Nike, the Greek goddess of war, is perched atop the Memorial.
The state capitol and legislative office building, overlooking Bushnell Memorial Park from Capitol Hill, is one of Hartford’s most popular tourist attractions. State executive offices include the Secretary of State, the Lieutenant Governor, and the Governor. Built in the High Victorian Gothic architectural style, the 1878 State Capital and Legislative Office Building is a Registered National Historic Landmark.
