Adventure MMOs come in various types, including puzzle-based, world-building, and combat-oriented games. They differ from RPGs and action games in their lack of statistical customization and reliance on real-time movement. Puzzle-based games involve subgames, while world-building games involve building and maintaining areas. Combat games rely on player reflexes and have in-game scoring systems. Adventure MMOs range from 2D to 3D interfaces.

There are several types of massively multiplayer online games (MMO) that belong to the adventure genre. One category is puzzle-based adventure games where players create characters who interact with the game world primarily through isolated puzzles such as match-card games. Another style of adventure MMO is more world-building oriented, such as developing and managing a room or house. Arguably the largest category of adventure MMOs, however, includes combat-oriented games where players work together or against each other to advance their characters or to rack up a high score or some other measure of success. The actual look and feel of adventure MMOs can range from browser-based two-dimensional (2D) interfaces to a fully realized three-dimensional (3D) world.

There is some debate about what aspects adventure MMOs contribute to differentiate them from gaming genres such as role-playing games (RPGs) or action games. In general, adventure MMOs deal with characters or situations that have little or no options for statistical customization. The gameplay generally also relies more on real-time movement and decisions, such as jumping or moving falling blocks than menus. Aspects such as long-term resource management or detailed character advancement and stats are usually not present or are minimized within the game balance.

There are many puzzle-based adventure MMOs. These games generally resemble other MMOs but, instead of focusing on combat or building, players are able to engage in a variety of subgames. The types of games vary from one MMO to another, but are usually easy to understand and play, and sometimes involve challenging other human players. In some cases, achieving a high score or beating another player can lead to some kind of in-game reward.

World-building is at the heart of some adventure MMOs. These games may involve building a room, a castle, a plot of land or a city and then completing adventures to maintain that area or to improve or customize it. There is a world-building MMO genre that is more simulation-oriented, although adventure-style world-building games are markedly different, because resources are earned by playing the game and not granted automatically over time.

The biggest adventure MMO genre includes combat oriented games. These games often rely on player reflexes to overcome challenges which can take the form of hostile enemies and terrains that require clever jumping to pass. Combat adventure games usually have some type of in-game scoring system, such as gold or experience, which is used to measure a character’s success or to improve the character over time. Unlike RPG gameplay, character enhancements in adventure games are generally fairly general and may not be permanent.
