Boarding schools provide both education and accommodation for students. There are three types: academic, specialist (such as military or performing arts), and therapeutic, which focuses on behavioral or emotional therapy for troubled teens.
An academic environment that provides not only classroom instruction but also room and board for at least some students is called a boarding school. A boarding school can have both students who live at home and attend the school for lessons, called “day students”, and students who make their home at school during school terms.
If we were to group schools according to their educational purpose, we could say that there are three types of boarding schools. One of the types of boarding school is an academic boarding school. The objective of the academic college is to prepare students for experiences in higher education. It is sometimes called prep school, prep being short for preparatory.
Another of the boarding school types, a specialist boarding school, has a special focus beyond the college preparatory curriculum, in one of several categories. Boys’ and girls’ schools focus on the needs manifested by children of all genders as they grow and develop. Military academies are a long-standing type of specialized college with the goal of preparing students for a military career and/or for civilian service and leadership.
Secrecy schools are another of the boarding school types with a special focus. These schools are usually funded and integrated with a religious community, whether Quaker, Muslim, Christian or Jewish, and present academics in light of espoused religious values. Performing arts schools complement academic training with pre-professional training in singing, drama, and/or dance. Performance opportunities are also foreseen. The sports school trains highly skilled athletes in sports as diverse as ice hockey and whitewater rapids.
Another type of graduate school tailors material for children in special circumstances. At the junction between the specialist boarding school and the therapeutic boarding school are schools for blind, deaf or long-term care students.
The third of the boarding types, the therapeutic boarding proper, can allow academics to take a back seat to a behavioral or emotional therapy primarily provided for troubled teens. These schools have a variety of names in addition to the therapeutic boarding school, including the emotional growth school and the wilderness boarding school and program.
