Different types of body piercings include ear, oral, nasal, abdominal, genital, and surface piercings. Ear piercings can be single, scaffold, or woven. Oral piercings include lip, tongue, cheek, and labret. Nose piercings are socially acceptable and can be concealed easily. Abdominal piercings include nipple and belly button piercings. Genital piercings are done for sexual satisfaction, and surface piercings are the least common. Reputable artists should always be consulted to reduce the risk of infection.

There are several different types of body piercing, depending on the location. Ear, oral, nasal, and abdominal piercings are the most common. Genital piercings and surface piercings, while less popular, are prevalent in certain cultures and age groups.

Ear piercings include any ear piercing, whether it is a single hole, scaffold piercing, or tissue piercing. A scaffold is made up of two holes in the ear connected with a piece of jewelry, typically a barbell. A woven piercing is two or more holes with a piece of jewelry going through, usually located on the outside of the ear. Many cultures pierce a girl’s ears shortly after birth, although this type of body piercing is considered gender-neutral.

Oral types of body piercings typically include adornment of the lip, tongue, cheek, or the area between the lip and chin, known as a labret. While almost any type of body jewelry can be used in oral piercings, the most popular are tongue weights and studs or small rings for the lip, cheek, and labret. In some cultures, especially certain African tribes, oral piercings are extremely common and are considered a mark of beauty.

Nose piercings have been performed since Biblical times and include jewelry placed in the nostril or septum. In India, this type of body piercing is popular, and many women pierce the left side of their nose and attach it, with a chain, to an ear piercing. Outside of ear piercings, nose piercings are probably one of the most socially acceptable piercings in the professional world, mainly due to their relative ease of concealment. Small, clear spacers in the nostrils, for example, are hard to spot unless a person is expressly looking for a piercing.

Abdominal piercings include nipple and belly button piercings, as well as surface piercings done directly over the nipple. The belly button is mostly pierced by women, while nipple piercings are almost equally common between the genders. The type of jewelry used in this type of body piercing varies from small curved barbells to more elaborate jewelry and pendants.

While most types of body piercing are done for cosmetic reasons, genital piercings are often done to increase sexual satisfaction. The most common of these, for women, is piercing the clitoral hood. The Prince Albert, a small piercing on the underside of the penis at the tip, is the most common genital piercing for men. Other genital area piercings include piercings of the labia, scrotum, and penile shaft scaffold piercings.

The least common piercings are surface piercings. This is usually done on the ankle, neck, forehead, eyebrow, and the space between the fingers and toes. They are usually worn with small studs or hoops and are prominent in certain cultures. Anyone planning to get any of these types of body piercings should always go to a reputable artist; doing so can greatly reduce the risk of infection.
