Bookbinding workers have different levels of expertise depending on the type of binding job. Regular document binding is the easiest, while hand binding is the most skilled. Repair binding is for fixing worn bindings on rare books, while book binding requires technical knowledge for organizing pages. Manual binding is the most expensive and complex, using only manual techniques.

Bookbinding workers are responsible for securing — or binding — stacks of paper, and different types of documents make for different binding jobs. Regular document binding is one of the easiest binding jobs because it just involves stacking and hole-punching the paper. Binding is a little more skilled, because workers need more technical knowledge to organize the pages. Repair binding involves fixing worn bindings, usually on rare books or similar documents. Hand binding is done without used machines, and this tends to be the most skilled job.

In many print shops, reports and other printed documents are linked. This is one of those bookbinding jobs that requires little technical knowledge, and the machines used are usually relatively simple. In this job, a binding worker must ensure that the pages are organized, although the printer normally does this when it prints the document. After the edge of the paper is punched, plastic or metal bindings will be pushed through the holes to ensure the document stays together during use.

Above regular binding in terms of technical expertise are book binding jobs. The binding itself is usually as simple as ordinary bookbinding, although the machines can be a little more difficult to use. The real difficulty comes with the organization of the sheets, because the worker often needs to take a large sheet with all the pages and fold or cut it in a certain way to ensure that the pages in the book are in the correct numerical order.

The only binding job that deals exclusively with previously linked documents is the repair binding. In this line of work, a binding worker fixes worn bindings, possibly replacing them completely. The specialization and cost of performing this type of binding means that it is usually only done for rare documents that have inherent value. Binding machines are generally used to facilitate worker binding.

At the highest level of technical knowledge and expertise, it is binding. No machines are used in this bookbinding job and the workers must have knowledge about book stitching and other complex bookbinding techniques. This type of binding is very expensive and rare books and very important documents can be bound using this technique. Sometimes the worker who does this also repairs the worn bindings, but the main difference between this and ordinary binding is that only manual techniques are used in manual binding.
