Types of construction hoists?

Construction hoists lift people or materials to different heights during building construction. Some hoists only carry materials, while others carry both. Jib cranes move only materials, while elevator hoists lift workers. Hoists can be motorized and travel along tracks, with brakes and restraint systems for safety.

Construction hoists are used to lift people or materials to various heights along a building or structure under construction. Some types of construction hoists are built solely to carry materials, while others are built to carry both materials and people. Jib cranes, for example, can only move materials, while elevator hoists can be used to lift workers to high levels of a scaffolding structure. Another type of hoist uses a pulley with a cable wrapped around it numerous times; a hook at the end of the cable is attached to the materials to be lifted and a motor rotates the pulley to move the cable.

A jib crane features a vertical pole mounted to the top of a building or structure; a horizontal jib is mounted on this vertical pole and a pulley is mounted at the end of the jib. A cable is attached to the crane structure and runs through the pulley at the end of the boom. The cable may be wound around another pulley closer to the vertical post and this pulley may be motorized to control the feeding of the cable. Attached to the end of the cable is a hook or other fastening mechanism, which can be attached to the objects to be lifted. These construction hoists are only used to haul materials, and the materials must be bundled or otherwise secured to accept the hook. This type of hoist is especially useful for carrying materials and moving them to a different location by moving the arm.

An electric hoist can also be used to lift objects in a similar way to the jib joist, but this type does not use any type of vertical pole or jib. It is essentially a motorized pulley with a cable wrapped around it numerous times; the body can be bolted or otherwise mounted to a fixed structure for stability, and the cable can be raised or lowered depending on the operator’s needs.

Some types of construction hoists are large and stable enough to allow people to move. These units are motorized and travel along a track mounted in sections on a building or structure or on a free-standing support system. The car of these construction hoists will use a rack and pinion system to move up or down, and brakes are usually fitted to the car to allow the operator to stop the car in an emergency. The car itself is usually made of a high-grade metal such as some grade of steel, and will be fitted with gates, rails, or other restraint systems to prevent users from falling, or to prevent materials from shifting or falling during the lift.
