Digital printing uses electronic files to produce prints with Direct Imaging Press (DI) or digital color printers. Three types are On-Demand, Variable Data, and Web-to-Print. DI produces better quality, while digital color printers are used for on-demand printing. Variable Data Printing (VDP) is personalized, and Web-to-Print allows online customization.
Digital printing is printing that uses electronic files in the production of prints. The two types of equipment used to produce it are the Direct Imaging Press (DI) and the digital color printer. The three different types of digital printing are On-Demand, Variable Data and Web-to-Print.
Both DI and digital color press are used for fast, short-run digital printing, but they are very different and give different results. DI Presses are based on an offset, or conventional, printing method that develops images automatically and can be waterless. Digital color printers use electrophotography, inkjet or xerography to develop images with toner, dry ink or dyes. A DI press usually produces better quality results, but printing done on a digital color press is still comparable to traditional offset printing.
On-Demand, or Print-on-Demand (POD), allows you to do small quantities of printing, which is perfect for companies that need to constantly update their printed parts. A digital color press is typically used for on-demand printing, unless higher print quality is needed, in which case a DI press can be used. If both quality and time are of the essence, a waterless DI press can be used as the drying time is very fast.
Variable Data Printing (VDP), or Variable Image Printing, is a personalized and customized type of digital printing. Databases containing specific consumer information make each piece of the same mail design personalized for each recipient. For example, when you get direct mail with your personalized name and/or address in text, it’s probably helped in conjunction with VDP techniques. Consumers appreciate personalized mail as it is less generic as databases often include customer preferences and order history to speed up the communication process. VDP digital printing is perfect for providing the same basic information to a group, while tailoring the information to each individual customer.
Web-to-Print digital printing, or web-enabled printing, allows you to personalize and personalize direct mail pieces online in a print management program. Clients and customers can also choose images such as photographs to include in materials such as brochures. A proof is shown online and when the piece is ready, one click sends it to the print supplier. The print supplier will usually receive the requested quantity of digital print in the mail to the customer in one to two business days.
