While agriculture isn’t as prevalent in many cultures as it was in decades past, there are still many different types of farms in full swing today. Some of these agricultural activities focus on the production of fruits or vegetables, while others focus on livestock, dairy products or even fish as the main production crop. Here are some examples of the different types of farms that can be found in many countries around the world.

When most people think of a farm, the first thought is land that focuses on farming. In years gone by, family farms tended to provide income for the owners and food for the table. While single-family farming is less popular than in previous decades, large commercial farms that focus on agricultural production are found in nearly every nation. These large farms may focus on a single cash crop, such as soybeans or corn. However, an agricultural business can also diversify by planning the land to produce different types of fruit or vegetables.

In addition to agricultural projects that focus on growing food, there are also farms that focus on livestock. Some common examples are pig farms, cow farms, and goat farms. Normally, farms of this type raise cattle for eventual slaughter and processing to supply meat in supermarkets. Depending on the prevailing culture in a particular country, this type of homestead may be referred to as a ranch, with the owners known as ranchers rather than farmers.

Fish farms are also common to many countries and cultures. In some cases, the fish selection focuses on supplying fresh produce to local restaurants and markets. Other such fisheries focus on global markets, farming large quantities of fish such as tilapia or grouper for use by commercial food producers. In the southern United States, catfish farming is a lucrative venture that works well as a family business.

Poultry farms usually involve the mass production of chickens which are commercially packaged and sold in various supermarkets or large fast food chains and restaurants. One of the growing trends with this type of agriculture is the whole land or green approach. Chickens raised on a farm set up as an organic operation or on whole land receive only feed composed of natural ingredients and are not subjected to artificial hormones to facilitate their growth.

The concept of a small family farm is still part of many cultures. Single-family farms are often owned by working people with full-time jobs but want to augment the food products they buy from grocery stores or supermarkets. A typical farm of this type will often focus on growing different foods that can be stored and used straight from the garden. Surplus produce can be sold in local markets and serve as a secondary source of family income. Beans, peas, tomatoes, peppers, corn, and okra are a few examples of produce that can be grown on a small family farm in the Midwestern United States.
