Fiberglass adhesives come in various types for different needs, including epoxy, gelcoat, vinyl resin, and polyester epoxy. They are used to attach fiberglass sheets to wooden surfaces for waterproofing. These adhesives can be purchased at hardware stores and online.

There are many different types of fiberglass adhesives available for use in bonding fiberglass to a workpiece. The types of adhesive vary according to the work piece and the needs of the worker. These mostly solvent-based adhesives are available for purchase at most hardware stores and also on the Internet.
When a worker uses fiberglass adhesive, they most often attach a sheet of fiberglass to an object that needs to be waterproof. Common applications include on boat hulls, surfboards and other wooden objects that can be subjected to and damaged by wet conditions. The fiberglass sheets are laid down on a wooden surface and then the adhesive is painted over it. Fiberglass adhesives are designed to seep through the pores of fiberglass sheets and bond them to the workpiece.

Resins are a common and popular form of fiberglass adhesive. The most commonly used are epoxy resins. A versatile and durable adhesive, epoxy resin is useful for both adhering and fixing fiberglass to a workpiece. It comes in a number of colors to suit the user’s needs, but most often it is clear or wood-colored.

Another popular form of resin is called a gelcoat. This fiberglass adhesive is similar to epoxy, but gives the worker the added benefit of being able to spray gelcoat instead of having to paint it. Gelcoat also tends to be light in colour, but colored versions are available if required. Most people who work with gelcoats find it more difficult to get the desired results, so they are mostly used by professionals.

If a very strong fiberglass adhesive is needed, vinyl resin is a popular choice. This type of resin can protect the wood from acids and other corrosive chemicals, as well as water. Vinyl resin is also effective in protecting against heat to some extent. Its other properties are similar to those of epoxy resins.

Some applications require only a thin coating of fiberglass adhesive for protection. For these situations, polyester epoxy resin is used. The polyester epoxy resin also includes wax for a smooth, shiny finish. If the worker needs to apply a second coat of polyester epoxy, the outer wax coating from the dried epoxy must be sanded down before it can be applied.

When a person purchases one of these epoxies, it is important to note that they are sold in two separate containers. The contents of these containers are combined when they are ready to be used and the quantity of each is clearly marked on most bottles. While some fiberglass adhesives do not require this process, it is required for all of the products mentioned above.
