Heavy hauling equipment is used to transport large, heavy objects and materials. Equipment includes large diesel tractors, forklifts, telehandlers, modular transporters, and main movers with exceptional towing capabilities.
Heavy hauling equipment is used to move extremely large, bulky or heavy objects and materials from one point to another. There are various types of equipment for this purpose and the right heavy hauling equipment will depend on what items or materials are being moved. Large diesel tractors are often used to haul low-deck or specially designed flatbed trailers for exceptionally large components, such as bridge components, water system components, aircraft engines or hulls, and much more. If the load needs to be lifted, specially designed forklifts or telehandlers can be used.
A telehandler is similar to a forklift in that it has forks that can be used in conjunction with pallets, but the telehandler has a long telescopic boom that can lift loads straight up and forward. The telehandler usually has a greater weight capacity than a forklift and can lift loads over obstacles or otherwise away from the body of the machine. This machine, however, runs the risk of tipping over if the weight capacity is exceeded, as the load can essentially tip the machine forward. Many telehandlers have an automatic shut-off system if the weight capacity is exceeded or if the load is extended too far forward.
Modular transporters can be used as heavy-duty transportation for exceptionally large loads. These machines will feature several tires mounted in succession to support a long, wide platform. This type of heavy hauling equipment can be self-propelled or can be towed by a towing vehicle. If it is self-propelled, an operator’s cab will be fitted towards the front of the machine, often below the level of the load being towed. The wheels can move back and forth, but in some cases they may also be able to move sideways if oriented correctly. The modular transporter will be equipped with air brakes and heavy-duty suspension to support the weight of the load.
Main movers are pieces of heavy hauling equipment resembling more typical tractor trailers or heavy trucks. These vehicles usually feature six wheels or more and have exceptional towing capabilities for hauling large loads. Trailers can be hitched to the main engines so that large loads can be hauled. When such a machine is in operation, drive vehicles are usually required to escort it from point to point. Any car or truck may be used as a lead vehicle, as long as lights and signs can be fitted to that vehicle.
