Types of Hiking Gear?

Hiking gear depends on the type and length of the hike and hiker preferences. Essential items include water purification systems, comfortable shoes, hydration systems, first aid kit, and maps. Backpackers need cooking supplies and light meals.

The type of hiking gear you will need will depend on the type of hike you are on, the length of the trip, and the preferences of the hiker. Some of the most important supplies for hiking include water purification systems, comfortable and durable hiking shoes or boots, and hydration systems such as water bottles or water bags. For long-term excursions such as backpacking, light meals will also be needed, as well as cooking supplies such as a backpack stove and cookware. Short-term hikers will need hiking supplies such as breathable clothing, a small backpack, headgear, and other clothing appropriate for the season.

Perhaps the most important item of all the hiking supplies you’ll need for a safe and enjoyable trip is a first aid kit. Hiking often means hikers will be away from rescuers and easy transportation, so a hiker must have a well-stocked first aid kit and the knowledge of how to use it appropriately. Bandages, wraps, rubber gloves, antibacterial ointment, safety pins, and even a bandana that can be used as a body harness should all be included in a first aid kit. The entire collection of items within the first aid kit should be contained in a waterproof container or bag to avoid damaging the items before they can be used.

Hiking supplies will also include food items, for short and long term hikes. For short-term travel, granola bars and energy snacks are usually sufficient, and no cooking items will be needed. Backpackers on multi-day trips, however, will need a backpack stove and light, durable cooking clothes. A backpacking stove packs small and is lightweight. It is usually powered by white gas or another type of combustible liquid or gas. The stove is usually only capable of producing a flame and cooking surface for a small to medium-sized pot or pan, so most backpackers choose to plan meals that can be cooked in a pot. Stainless steel cookware is a common choice for backpackers, although other light and relatively strong metals can be used.

At the top of the list of important hiking supplies is a map or guidebook. The map should be up to date and detailed enough, and a hiking guide should include useful information on sites to buy drinking water or food, and also shelter if needed. For some hikers, a compass or GPS system is essential, although the hiker will need to know how to use this equipment and have an adequate budget to purchase it.
