Linguistic interpreting can be challenging but there are different techniques to make it more efficient, such as simultaneous and consecutive interpreting, whispered interpretations, and machine translation. Remote interpreting can also be used with teleconferencing equipment.

Linguistic interpreting is often needed in contexts such as business meetings. It can, however, be challenging for translators and listeners. There are different types of translation techniques that usually make the process more efficient, depending on the setting. Simultaneous and consecutive interpreting are the common forms often used, while interpreters can also sit next to a listener and whisper in their ear if this method is necessary. Interpretation can also be performed with the aid of machines, while such services are often required in financial, legal, medical, scientific and other contexts.

Simultaneous interpretation is often used in business meetings where there is a separate booth for the translator. Typically part of meetings with multilingual participants, it usually requires the interpreter to listen to the meeting through headphones, while continuously repeating words in another language. One advantage is that a meeting usually doesn’t take any longer than it otherwise would, and multiple languages can be interpreted and listened to effectively through headsets.

Individual thoughts and sentences are typically spoken one at a time and then repeated into another language, with consecutive interpretation. This format normally involves the interpreter standing next to a presenter giving a talk. With two people taking turns talking, the meeting can last twice as long as it normally would, but one advantage of this method is that no technical equipment other than a sound system with microphones is usually needed. The format is usually more suitable for a bilingual audience.

If there is no equipment such as an enclosed booth, sometimes a meeting can accommodate whispered interpretations. The interpreter usually sits close to the table to speak into the other person’s ear. Transmitters and microphones are sometimes used with the translator sitting further away. The language is typically translated into the listener’s native language as the bout progresses; the whisper technique is generally used in short meetings.

Technology sometimes benefits interpreters, as there are hand translators and specialized types of software that can aid in language interpretation. Machine translation can be fully automated, or people can interact with electronic interpretations to select the appropriate words or forms. A combination of the two is often considered more accurate.

Other types of equipment may also be incorporated. Remote interpreting can be implemented if the interpreters are located in a location other than the meeting room. Teleconferencing equipment is sometimes retrofitted for this purpose, while some systems can be used in a booth to host local and remote meeting venues. Sometimes multiple systems and multiple booths in different locations are connected by sophisticated telecommunication equipment.
