Leather belts have different styles that go in and out of fashion. In the 1980s, wide belts with large plastic buckles were popular, while the 1990s saw the rise of woven and spiked belts. Today, unique buckles and pop culture insignia are popular. Leather belts are versatile and can be worn with jeans or formal wear.

Leather belts have long been considered popular fashion accessories; however, the different types tend to go out of style with the passing trends of each year. Details like the buckle, the texture of the leather, and the way the belts are worn can often be indicative of certain fashion eras.

The 1980s featured a wide selection of different styles of leather belts, ranging from very skinny to wide, cummerbund-like. Wide belts were often made of very soft supple leather or synthetic leather, and featured large plastic buckles in the shape of a circle or square. Sometimes they were worn loose on the hips, a style that has since returned to fashion in the new millennium. Other 1980s styles that have made a comeback include plaid belts and belts with metal studs and draped chains.

In the early 1990s, woven leather belts became a popular fashion item. These styles were often sold in earthy colors such as beige, brown, and black, but have since received an update, becoming popular in metallic colors. Another style popularized in the 1990s featured large metal buckles and spikes, sometimes in shapes like flowers or butterflies.

Modern leather belts come in various shapes and styles that are both retro-inspired and contemporary. Unique buckles have become a popular way to distinguish plain belts from the pack. Belt buckles today come in various novelty shapes and with various pop culture insignia, such as those featuring images or engravings of popular bands and artists or brand logos. Those with large cowboy-style buckles have long been a timeless feature of Western clothing and fashion.

Leather belts are most often worn with jeans; however, more “dressy” styles such as chunky belts or tied “rope” belts can also be worn with formal wear. Genuine leather belts often have a stamp on the inside to distinguish them from belts made of synthetic materials.
