Hoists are used to lift and move heavy objects, with equipment varying depending on the type of hoist and purpose. Pulleys are commonly used, with motorized or manual operation, and can be mounted on a trolley or boom arm system. Mounting hardware is required for stability.

Hoists are units designed to lift heavy objects and move them from one place to another. Hoist equipment can vary significantly depending on the type of hoist, where it will be used, the items to be lifted, and the purpose of the hoist in general. Sometimes the lifting equipment simply includes the components of the system itself, such as pulleys, cables, ropes, and so on, while in other cases the equipment may include mounting hardware, hydraulic cylinders, and other items that make the hoist usable.

Most hoists use some sort of pulley system; pulleys are wheels specially designed to drive a rope, cable, belt or chain and are usually mounted on an axle to allow the wheel to spin freely. These pulleys may be mounted on a motor that spins the unit to control the wire feed, while in other cases they may be manually operated. Other lifting equipment may include any of the controls for a motorized pulley unit, the motor itself, and the pulley housing which can be mounted on solid surfaces for added stability.

The hoist can be mounted on a trolley, which is a frame equipped with wheels that can move along a track. The lifting equipment needed for such a setup includes the runway itself, which is usually heavy metal mounted high above the ground; the carriage, also usually made of metal and equipped with wheels designed to work in conjunction with the track; and mounting hardware to ensure all items are stable for use. The pulley itself can vary in design, but is usually mounted on the carriage and features a system of motorized pulleys that power the cable or chains.

A boom system is sometimes used; the lifting equipment associated with such a system may include the boom arm, which is attached to a vertical post. This system often rotates so that a user can lift an object and carry it to a different location by swinging the boom arm in a different direction. Mounting hardware will be required to ensure this unit is stable and secured to a solid platform. If the jib boom is intended for use on a pickup truck, the unit must be mounted to the truck bed or underbed frame; this is achieved with special mounting hardware.
