Types of Mining Equipment?

Mining equipment includes drills, blasters, excavators, earthmoving machines, and tools for use within the mine. The type of equipment used depends on the substance being extracted. Safety is crucial in mining, despite advanced tools. Most mines consist of shafts and tunnels, and earthmoving equipment is used above ground. Hand tools, transportation systems, and safety instruments are also necessary for mining operations.

There are many different types of tools that can qualify as mining equipment, although the main categories tend to be drills, blasters and excavators, earthmoving equipment and tools designed for use within the mine such as rail cars, shovels and blowers . A lot has to do with the sophistication and size of the operation as well as the substance being extracted. Coal mining is often physically different from diamond mining, for example, and while the overall goal and main process are similar, the tools needed can vary. Even with the most advanced tools and modern machines, mining remains a dangerous business. The right equipment can take some risk out of the equation, but it’s never foolproof. Clearing out chunks of earth, creating caves and passages, and then sending people into the chambers to discover something of value will have inherent risks, no matter what precautions you take. Most of today’s mining equipment is made with safety in mind, but caution and care are still essential.

Understanding the mining process

Humans discovered long ago that vast reserves of minerals, metals, and petroleum flow through the earth’s lower cores, but reaching and extracting them efficiently and methodically is far from easy. Most mines consist of shafts that are blasted out of the earth at strategic points, and from there incoming tunnels and chambers are dug more thoroughly to create entire mine systems below the surface. Large pits can also be swept away to allow mostly above ground sieving and searching. The type of equipment used for a specific project is usually subject to the type of mining under consideration. However, there are a few main categories and tools that most miners find indispensable, no matter the circumstances.

Trapani

Augers are a type of mining equipment that serves an important purpose when the operation is focused underground. The miners place their drills at strategic points and carefully cut to create an opening that can go many feet underground. The boreholes are often used first to test the soil for mineral content, then serve as portals for subsequent mining work.

Blasters and excavators

Even the most powerful drill cannot penetrate all substances, especially large rocks. Even drilling an entire mine shaft can be a lot of work. Blasters are tools that can make it much easier to penetrate tactile terrain and can dislodge hard rocks that won’t allow the drill to go through. The blast often involves explosives and the process is usually not very precise. However, it can open up an area and loosen the earth, which can make it easier to continue with opening a mine.

Once an area has been blasted, the excavator will be used to retrieve rocks and other debris that may have been removed during the drilling and blasting processes. In this sense, the excavator clears the openings and creates the necessary space that the miners can access more easily.

Earth moving machines
Above ground, the most common type of mining equipment is usually earth moving equipment, which is used to transport earth, soil, and other loose particles from one point to another designated location. Without this particular equipment, dirt and debris can hamper mining operations and can fill chambers that must be clear to allow for efficient excavation. Bulldozers and other similar machines can come in very handy in these situations. Another application of the bulldozer would be to clear areas that may be covered by plants or shrubs using the bucket-shaped openings located in the front of such equipment.
Inside the mine
There are also a number of tools that miners need within the shafts and chambers. Hand tools like picks and shovels are common examples, as are things like headlamps and torches. In large operations, some sort of mining transportation system, such as a railcar or pulley, can make the removal of mined commodities more efficient. The instruments dedicated to the safety of the miners are also very important, including the fans to mitigate the fumes and allow the regular circulation of oxygen.
