MMO shooters are multiplayer games where players control avatars with weapons and complete challenges. Settings range from sci-fi to historical, and gameplay can be competitive or cooperative. Some incorporate RPG elements, while others focus on player skill. Payment models vary from free to play with ads to paid extras.

Massively multiplayer online games, or MMOs, with an emphasis on reflex-based and precision-based challenges are MMO shooters. Such games usually give each player control over an avatar who carries a weapon of some form, usually a pistol. The player controls his avatar and attempts to complete a set of different challenges or objectives that may involve cooperating or competing with other avatars controlled by other players. MMO shooters can be very significant in terms of genre, scale, gameplay goals, aesthetic style, and a number of other factors.

There are many different settings used for MMO shooters. Some of these games are set in science fiction settings, while others are based on historical settings such as World War II. The setting of the game drastically influences the art direction, the look of avatars and weapons, the gameplay, the stories and many other important aspects of the games.

The implementation of multiplayer gameplay in MMO shooters is another major determining factor of such games. Most often, players join teams that compete against other teams, either in an online world or in timed matches. Each player’s and team’s stats are tracked over time, and the goal is to achieve the best personal and team score. In some matches, there are no fixed teams and matches pit all players against each other, so only one player’s personal score is important. Other MMO shooters are primarily cooperative, prompting players to team up against computer-generated opponents and challenges.

Few massively multiplayer online games are purely shooters. Many, for example, incorporate RPG elements such as character building and combat based on quantitative skills assigned to the avatar and developed through gameplay. A well-behaved player can improve some aspects of his avatar, such as speed or aiming ability. Other MMO shooters are purely shooters, which usually means they’re mostly, if not entirely, based on player skill rather than the avatar’s “skill level” or special abilities.

Another big difference between the different MMO shooters is the expense per player. Some MMO shooters are completely free to play and are usually supported by ads. Others require players to either purchase the game first or pay a monthly fee to continue playing. Still others offer the base game for free but charge money for extras like improved weapons or unique character models. This payment model is especially popular as more people are likely to play and eventually want the extended features if they can play for free initially.
