Molybdenum grease, also known as molybdenum disulfide or lubricant, is available in various forms and grades. It can be used for industrial anti-seize compounds and metal forming lubricants. Molybdenum dry plating and a blend of molybdenum disulfide mixed with graphite are common types. It can be purchased in aerosol or spray form and is also available as a thick paste. Molybdenite, a naturally occurring mineral, was one of the oldest forms of molybdenum grease. It is also sold in small plastic tubes for use in miniature mechanical devices.

There are many different types of molybdenum grease. This lubricating substance can be called molybdenum grease, molybdenum disulfide, molybdenum lubricant or even just molybdenum. Numerous companies manufacture and sell molybdenum disulfide lubricants, so there is a great variety among the products. Moly lubricants are also marketed as industrial anti-seize compounds, so other names include gasket coating, thread permanent lubricant, furnace lubricant, and metal forming lubricant for alloys.

Molybdenum lubricants are available in the form of greases, aerosols, powders and very fine powders. Moly is also available in various grades, such as technical grade and super-fine technical grade. Some companies will create a custom formula of molybdenum grease based on customer specifications.

A type of molybdenum disulfide or molybdenum grease is mixed with a non-flammable solvent. Upon application, the solvent carries the molybdenum throughout the area needing lubrication and then evaporates, leaving behind an even thin layer of molybdenum. This type of treatment or product is sometimes called molybdenum dry plating.

Another type of molybdenum grease is made from a blend of molybdenum disulfide mixed with graphite and a non-melting synthetic carrier to disperse the material. The surfaces of the plates mix with a layer of lubrication that can withstand extreme temperatures, rust and corrosion. It’s also water resistant. This type of molybdenum is used in industrial applications when reactive metals need to be treated to prevent galling.

As an aerosol or spray, molybdenum grease can be purchased in a container that resembles a typical spray paint can. This type of product is called a molybdenum spray or dry film lubricant. The benefits of the spray form include ease of application and quick drying time. Molybdenum grease is also available in a thick paste called metal assembly paste. This shape is also generally sold for industrial use and is intended for extreme pressures during metal assembly, such as press-fitting or bearing failure.

One of the oldest forms of molybdenum grease is the naturally occurring mineral molybdenite. This form was discovered by prospectors and settlers moving across the American West; these individuals recognized its unique lubricating properties. It was commonly used as an axel grease for wagons.
Craft and hob stores sell molybdenum grease in small plastic tubes. In this form, it is typically used as a lubricant for toy trains, rockets, and other miniature mechanical devices. These small tubes of molybdenum lube come with removable lids that are replaced with a sharp, screw-on, glue-like applicator.
