Newspaper advertising offers various options for businesses, from small and cheap classified ads to larger promotional and sales announcements. Business card ads and sale/coupon ads are also popular, while spadees are unique and attention-grabbing due to their placement on the newspaper’s spine.

Newspaper advertising is a popular method of attracting attention to a business, garage sale, or service they offer. To most effectively advertise your event or business, there are several types of newspaper advertising options that differ in size, location, shape, and cost. There are ads that are small and cheap; business card ads are, as you might expect, about the size of a business card; promotional and sales announcements used primarily by businesses; and spadee that wrap around newspaper and are hard to avoid.

Classified ads are the smallest of the types of newspaper advertising and also the cheapest. The advertiser writes his advertisement and the cost is based on the number of type lines used. These advertisements are often printed on a regular basis and are purchased for a series of newspaper circulation cycles; there are usually many classified ads clustered in one area with little in the way of design to differentiate one from the other. These ads are popular with people who are selling garages or selling individual items.

Business card ads behave much like a business card. This type of newspaper advertisement is about the size of a business card and is commonly used as a platform for the advertiser to introduce themselves to the reader. Just like ads, these ads are grouped together, but can be either color or black and white, depending on what the advertiser pays and what options the newspaper offers. Unlike ads, these ads attract more attention because the advertiser can use a design, images and words to attract the reader.

Sale and coupon ads are similar newspaper ad units, except that sale ads show a sale for everyone, while coupon ads have a coupon that the reader must redeem in order to receive the discount. There are usually different sizes for this ad, such as quarter page, half page and full page, and most newspapers will offer color printing at a higher price. This ad attracts a lot of attention, because it alerts the reader to a sale, and the design and size of the ad will make many readers scan the ad, even if they aren’t initially interested.

Spadees are unique newspaper ads that are very attractive because they act as a bit of a nuisance. This ad is attached to the spine of the newspaper and wraps around the front cover, forcing the reader to move the ad to read the front page. The ad requires interaction, so nearly every reader will at least watch the ad.
