Oven gloves protect hands from burns when handling hot pots and pans. Different types include conventional, neoprene, and silicone, with varying heat protection ratings and lengths. They also come in different colors and patterns.

Oven gloves are protective gloves used in the kitchen to handle hot pots, pans and dishes. There are different types to suit every need, as well as different materials to choose from.

The most important feature of oven mitts is their ability to protect your hands from burns. Conventional, inexpensive ones are made of materials treated with flame-retardant finishes and are suitable for handling intermittent dry heat up to about 200°F (93.3°C). Gloves in this category are made with layers of material and insulation and are often quilted in appearance.

Neoprene oven mitts are made from the same material as wetsuits and offer a good non-slip grip. This type of glove is typically rated to protect up to 400°F (204.4°C). The outer construction is seamless, suitable for reaching hot liquids. The neoprene ones are machine washable and can even be put in the dishwasher.

Silicone oven mitts present another choice for heavy-duty protection. They are made using an injection molding process with food grade silicone. These gloves are also rubbery, grip well, and are commonly rated at 500°F (260°C). The silicone oven mitts can even be used to reach hot water or oil, and the non-porous material is completely hygienic. Like neoprene gloves, they are non-staining and dishwasher safe.

Some oven mitts are coated with a silicone spray to give them a non-stick finish. They are comparable to traditional quilted gloves. They are normally rated at around 200°F (93.3°C) and can also be used as freezer gloves.

In addition to a choice of material, oven mitts are available in various lengths. The short ones are fine for lifting pans, but reaching in and out of the oven can result in a burned forearm. Longer gloves extend over the forearm to offer more protection.

If you like color in the kitchen, terry cloth gloves or quilted oven mitts come in a variety of patterns and colors. Neoprene and silicone come in solid colors, but due to their rubbery feel, they’re likely not to show up as traditional gloves.
