Prosthetic noses are not just for entertainment purposes, but are also used in medical situations such as after a rhinectomy. Medical prosthetic noses are designed realistically, while entertainment-related noses are made from foam or plastic. Prosthetic noses can be attached using stickers, surgical adhesives, or titanium magnets and implants. Creating a prosthetic device can be a long process involving wax casts or photographs to sculpt a mold, which is then painted with unique features.

When people hear the term “prosthetic noses,” they usually think of clown costumes and other entertainment applications. While there are many entertainment-related reasons people wear prosthetic noses, there are numerous medical situations in which a person needs a prosthetic nose. A rhinectomy is the surgical removal of a person’s nose, and people often acquire a prosthetic nose after surgery. While people wear fun-related noses to get attention, experts design medical prosthetic noses realistically because the nose is a prominent facial feature.

The funniest and funniest noses are clown noses, but there are other types, including alien costume noses. Many companies offer full noses and nose tips for amateur use, including noses held to the wearer’s face with bungee cord. More complex noses use adhesives to attach the braces. Manufacturers mold entertainment-related noses from latex- or non-latex-based foam or plastic. Some clown noses have plastic squeaks or lights inserted as an extra feature.

A person may need a prosthetic nose due to a birth defect, an accident, or an illness, such as cancer. Historically, there is evidence that people used paper mache, clay and even wood to create replacements. In the mid-1950s, medical school instructors taught students how to make silicone implants. Through continuous improvement, anaplastologists at Medical Art Prosthetics (MAP) and other prosthetics specialists have developed sophisticated prosthetic noses that look almost realistic.

People attach medical prosthetic noses using one of two methods. Special stickers can stick noses and parts of the nose. Surgical adhesives need special adhesive removers, and a person must follow the manufacturer’s instructions to prevent skin damage. A newer method uses titanium magnets and implants.

A maxillofacial surgeon inserts titanium implants into the facial bones. The implant manufacturer molds magnets into the silicone implant. The surgeon uses a template to make sure the magnets and titanium inserts are perfectly aligned. Magnets help prosthetic noses fit better and more securely than those held by glue alone.

Creating a prosthetic device can be a long process. Sometimes the anaplastologist takes a wax cast of a person’s nose before a maxillofacial surgeon removes it. Other times he uses photographs to sculpt a wax nose and makes a mold from the sculpture. The anaplastologist pours the silicone into the mold and heat cures it. When the cure is complete, an artist’s hand paints the prosthetic nose with freckles, blood vessels, and other features that are unique to the patient.
