Protective gloves can prevent hand injuries from chemicals, blood, cuts, burns, and frostbite. The material determines the hazards protected against. Different gloves are used for different purposes, such as rubber, neoprene, vinyl, latex, polyethylene, nitrile, wire mesh, Kevlar®, and leather. They can be purchased in stores or online.

There are several types of protective gloves that help prevent hand injuries. They can protect themselves from a variety of dangers including chemicals, blood, cuts, burns and frostbite. The type of material the gloves are made from determines the hazards the wearer is protected against.
When working with chemicals, there are different types of gloves a person can wear. They are usually made of rubber, neoprene or vinyl. Neoprene, for example, helps provide insulation when working with cold or icy chemicals. Because chemicals can enter the glove, these safety gloves are often tight at the wrist. Persons handling tubes or bottles should ensure gloves have a non-slip grip to avoid dropping the fragile containers.

Gloves that protect against blood and other body fluids are usually made from latex, polyethylene, or nitrile. They are usually disposable as they are often used in healthcare delivery and therefore need to be changed between patients to prevent the spread of disease. While latex is a popular material for this type of protective glove, some people are allergic to it, so polyethylene or nitrile versions are available. All varieties, however, try to be resistant to puncture and abrasion.

There are several types of gloves that protect against cuts on the hands. Most of these gloves are made from wire mesh or Kevlar® mesh and are typically worn by people working in the glass handling, sheet metal and fabric cutting industries. Most, though not all, of these gloves are also puncture resistant and can be worn by people who work with animals.

Leather and Kevlar® gloves are used to protect against extreme heat. Leather gloves are fine for handling hot objects, but they aren’t flame retardant. Since Kevlar® is flame resistant, it is an ideal material for welder’s gloves.
People who work in freezers, cold rooms and outdoors in snow and ice need protective gloves to protect themselves from freezing. These gloves are usually made from leather and lined with fleece. They have hook-and-loop closures or are attached to the wrist to prevent cold air or snow from entering the gloves. People who work with sharp objects in a cold environment may prefer PVC-coated insulated gloves for extra protection.

Safety gloves can be purchased at stores that sell uniforms and other types of work equipment. They can also be purchased online at various websites. Most resellers offer a bulk purchase discount.
