Punching bags require a strong mounting system to prevent injury and optimize performance. There are three types of stands: upright cage, upright weighted, wall-mounted, and freestanding. The freestanding cage-style is the most commonly used due to its low cost, mobility, and heavy-duty design.

Punching bags are a great way to practice throwing all kinds of punches and kicks for basic or advanced boxing training and kickboxing technique, but they are usually very heavy and cumbersome. More commonly known as punching bags, punching bags require a very strong mounting system to provide optimal performance and prevent the bag from falling off and possibly injuring someone. There are three main types of punching bag stands: upright cage, upright weighted, wall-mounted, and freestanding.

A punching bag is common equipment found in most commercial gyms and many home gyms. To fully utilize the equipment, it must be securely mounted. For that reason, a punching bag holder of some kind is usually required. If a stand is not used or is installed incorrectly, it could cause serious injury and reduce the effectiveness of the punching bag.

Vertical weighted punching bag holders are usually made of heavy-duty plastic with a large hollow chamber at the bottom of the holder that is filled with water or sand. The heavy water chamber prevents the mount from falling over when hit. A vertical mast is attached to the top of the water chamber which allows a specially shaped punching bag to slide through. This type of punching bag holder is ideal for confined spaces where the bag holder will need to be moved frequently.

Wall mounted punching bag holders are a more traditional way to hang a punching bag. Wall-mounted brackets are screwed to studs inside a wall and feature a short arm with an S-hook at the end from which the bag is hung. Wall mounted punching bag racks are most often used in boxing gyms due to their strong and durable design.

The most commonly used punching bag stands are those for free-standing cages. The freestanding cage bag hanger uses a tall pole with an S-hook at the top to hang the punching bag and forward-facing feet at the bottom to prevent the rack from falling over. This type of bag rack is widely used due to its low cost, its ability to move freely, and its heavy-duty design. While the wall-mount hanger is ideal for heavy use and abuse, and the vertically weighted design is ideal for light use in a confined space, the free-standing cage-style punch bag holder combines the best features of the other two designs .
