Types of RV lights?

RVs use a variety of interior and exterior lights, including incandescent, fluorescent, and LED bulbs. Many use miniature lamps powered by the 12v battery, and some have two filaments. Exterior lights include taillights, headlights, and awning lights that may require AC or a 12v outlet.

Recreational vehicles (RVs) use interior and exterior lights and may also have a variety of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), fluorescent, and incandescent. Interior lights for RVs are usually mini incandescent bulbs, but fluorescent and LED bulbs are also available. RV taillights are also typically mini incandescent lamps, and in many cases will be the same bulbs used by the interior fixtures. Headlights found on RVs are often the same as those used by other automotive applications, so older RVs have sealed beam units and newer ones tend to have halogen bulb inserts. A variety of other RV lights are also available, such as awnings and patio lamps that can come in handy when camping.

Many interior and exterior RV lights are automotive miniature lamps. These little bulbs use an incandescent filament and are powered by the 12v coach or motor battery. Some of these miniature lamps use a single filament, but others use two. Miniature lamps used in RV interiors tend to have similar sized bases, but may use one or two contact points, depending on the number of filaments. If a two terminal bulb is placed in a single terminal socket, it will normally cause a short circuit and may blow a fuse.

In many cases, the same miniature lamps used inside are also found in exterior RV lights. RVs have brake lights, side markers, turn signals, and backup lights that often use incandescent bulbs. The side markers are often a very small bulb, but the turn signals, backup lights, and brake lights often use the same miniature bulbs as the interior accessories. Motorhomes also have headlights that are often identical to those of other vehicles using the same chassis.

Interior and exterior RV lights can also use LEDs to save energy. These types of lights are usually added after the vehicle is purchased. Interior fluorescent fixtures can also be purchased as an upgrade, although many high-end RVs come equipped with them from the factory.

Other types of RV lights are generally used while camping. Mini string lights are often designed with clips to hang them from awnings. These awning lights sometimes require alternating current (AC) to operate, although others can be plugged into a 12v cigarette lighter. Some RVs even come with an exterior 12v outlet to power your awning lights and a variety of other accessories.
